Expedition Fail

Being in need of some fresh food, I set out on an expedition this morning, only to watch both the 210 and 211 buses whiz down Fremont Boulevard just minutes before I arrived at the stop. Being unwilling to wait half an hour in the hot sun, I popped into the local Mexican grocery to see what they had. I have come away with an onion, some tomatoes and a packet of chorizo.

Mexican chorizo is not much like the sausage that you get in Europe. Although it comes in sausage-shaped packet, it is much more like mince in consistency. You certainly can’t slice it. So I shall treat it like mince and concoct something spicy and glorious. I have rice, refried beans and sweetcorn in the store cupboard. I think that will do for dinner.

And I’ll make another attempt to go in search of fresh olives and orange juice tomorrow.

  1. Yes, I was terribly disappointed the first time I bought Mexican chorizo. Now I love it, but it took some getting used to.

You can find the real stuff various places, like The Spanish Table, but it’s not as common.

Oh, it is good stuff alright. You just have to remember that, while it might taste similar to the Spanish variety, you can’t use it in the same way in recipes because it can’t be sliced.

How is this a fail? You still got food . . . its not as bad a fail as the licorice I bought at one point in Tampere and went to eat it and said “what is this chemical tasting hard plastic they are calling food?”

I remember my mother telling stories about not being able to find refried beans ANYWHERE when she first moved to Ohio from California, where she grew up, and saying “What is this frozen hinterland I have moved to? I gotta get out of this berg!”

At least in CA they have lots of real fresh food coming from nearby….

You haven’t seen food fail until you’ve seen canned tamales, if they still exist that is.

Mexican chorizo is one of the many things that makes me wish I was still there… you can’t get the damned stuff anywhere near me. When I can make a living from nothing but a laptop and a wifi connection I’ll head back to Oaxaca, and then I’ll eat chorizo every day until I resemble a guero beachball.

That’s why it is just “Fail” and not “FAIL”. It hate missing buses. It is so disorganized of me.
