Cookie Policy

In compliance with EU Law, here is how “cookies” are used on this website.

Cookies are software tools that save information about what you do when browsing a website. While they can be used intrusively to gather information about your browsing habits, most of the use of these tools is benign, and often essential to the operation of the site. Typically cookies either pass information from one website to another, or forwards in time to remember how you used a site in the past. Here is how cookies are used at this website.

Spam prevention

The Bad Behavior anti-spam tool, which we use to help prevent spam comments appearing on this site, uses a cookie.

Social media

Those little buttons that allow you to easily share posts with your friends on Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and so on use cookies to tell the social media site what information you wanted to share.

Comments

WordPress (the software on which this website runs) uses cookies to remember your name, email and URL so that once you have made one comment here you don’t have to type those things in each time.

Google Analytics

This feature sends page view events (and potentially video play events) over to Google Analytics for consumption. Please refer to the appropriate Google Analytics documentation for the specific type of data it collects.

Mobile Theme

A cookie (akm_mobile) is stored for 3.5 days to remember whether or not a visitor of the site wishes to view its mobile version. Learn more about this cookie.

Protect

In order to check login activity and potentially block fraudulent attempts, the following information is used: attempting user’s IP address, attempting user’s email address/username (i.e. according to the value they were attempting to use during the login process), and all IP-related HTTP headers attached to the attempting user.

Activity Tracked: Failed login attempts (these include IP address and user agent). We also set a cookie (jpp_math_pass) for 1 day to remember if/when a user has successfully completed a math captcha to prove that they’re a real human. Learn more about this cookie.

Data Recorded: Failed login attempts, which contain the user’s IP address, attempted username or email address, and user agent information.

Sharing by Email

Data Used: When sharing content via email, the following information is used: sharing party’s name and email address, IP address (for spam checking), user agent (for spam checking), and email body/content. This content will be sent to the spam protection software so that a spam check can be performed.

WordPress.com Stats

Usage statistics for this site are also recorded by WordPress.com.

Data Used: IP address, WordPress.com user ID (if logged in), WordPress.com username (if logged in), user agent, visiting URL, referring URL, timestamp of event, browser language, country code. Important: We do not have access to any of this information via this feature. For example, we can see that a specific post has 285 views, but we cannot see which specific users/accounts viewed that post. Stats logs — containing visitor IP addresses and WordPress.com usernames (if available) — are retained by WordPress.com for 28 days and are used for the sole purpose of powering this feature.

Activity Tracked: Post and page views, outbound link clicks, referring URLs and search engine terms, and country. The code also tracks performance on each page load that includes the Javascript file used for tracking stats. This is exclusively for aggregate performance tracking in order to make sure that WordPress code is not causing performance issues. This includes the tracking of page load times and resource loading duration (image files, Javascript files, CSS files, etc.).

  1. I had heard the term ‘cookies many times but was not very clear on how these are misused. Thank you for explaining the cookie policy in detail and also the entire concept related with them. This was a great help.

  2. Dear friends:

I had messages of support from friends all over the world after John passed away, I am most grateful to you for your respect of John Brunner and your generosity of spirit. I would like to thank you also for supporting me with my memoir LOVE NEVER DIES which is about my life with John and BBC published in their webpage. My memoir was one of the top ten most read and most liked. I believe John has been appreciated. For which my heartfelt thanks.

    Best wishes to you all.
    Liyi Brunner
