Un Congrès Virtuel

Hooray for our Francophone friends in Montréal! Via Fractale Framboise I discover that they are planning a virtual convention (Boréal is the name of their annual real-world convention). Unfortunately for most of you, it looks like it will be entirely en Français, but they have timed it so that people in Europe can participate and I know of a few of my readers will be able to take advantage of that.

By the way, folks, if you want a suggestion for a program item, how about picking some French-language fiction that you can all get behind in the nominations for this year’s Hugos. I’m sure that there are enough Francophones with nominating rights to get something on the ballot.

  1. Alas, my sole piece of French fiction is a translation. In principle I’d be all for it.

  2. (Hi, I’m Christian Sauvé, the mastermind behind the Carnaval Boréal.)

Goodness gracious, Cheryl… I was just about to email you about our Boréal virtual convention, was actually poking around the site to find your email address –and then I see you scooping even me.

Anyway: Yes, I’m sorry that the convention, at this point, looks as if it’s going to take place only in French. This being said, if our model proves successful, expect our 2011 edition to follow the example of our physical convention and include a few events in English.

Your suggestions about nominating French fiction has been duly noted and integrated in our description for the Awards panel.

  3. hi,

Carnaval Boréal is almost over and I feel like I do at the end of a con day — tired and with my head full of ideas.

It was quite the success. Organizer Christian Sauvé did a great job. I’m not sure how many people participated but I know over 1500 posts were generated in 6 hours (plus some twittering).

BTW, those who can’t read French can always view the artshow: http://www.carnavalboreal2010.com/galerie/
