With all of the fuss about financial markets I completely missed this potentially more serious story. I just caught up with it via Nature, and they don’t seem too worried right now, but it has a small potential to be very, very bad indeed.

Finnish scientist and writer Risto Isomäki wrote about this already couple of years ago in his novel Sarasvatin hiekkaa (Sands of Sarasvati, 2005), and has been lecturing about it already before that.
Scary.
He received European science fiction award in 1994.
His books are translated just now into several languages and I think he will be remembered not only as the most important writer of ecological sf of our time but also as a scientist: as one of the saviours of the earth.
