Things must be slow in the Orbit offices, because Tim Holman has put an intern to work counting the occurrence of various different motifs on fantasy book covers. Swords apparently came out on top. However, Tim neglected to ask his assistant to count occurrences of cleavage so I suspect that the results may be somewhat incomplete.

and by cleavage I assume you mean:
cleavage barely contained in chainmail of such an absurdly diaphanous manufacture that it would be useless.
plus the chainmail is usually drawn as being worn directly next to the skin – which wouldn’t pinch much at all…
Cleavage? Oh that’s a good one! Of course, when so many covers are shot from behind, it’s hard to see the cleavage. Maybe they should’ve included butt-shots instead?

There’s an entire Master’s thesis in that chart! In the top three are swords and castles/citadels. Hmm. What could those represent? I wonder. I’ve got nothing for the glowy magic. God complex, maybe?
