Facebook Spam

I’ve just taken the unusual (for me) step of de-friending someone on Facebook. Why? Because said person has been sending out “suggest you become a fan of” invitations for the same person once a week for over a month. The writer he wants me to become a fan of has a different name, but I suspect it is his pen name. In any case, if someone ignores a fan request once, they are not likely to take you up on it a second time, and absolutely not on the 5th. It just gets annoying. It is not, by any stretch of the imagination, sensible marketing.

  1. I have the same problem on Twitter. People follow me, and when I don’t follow them back, they unfollow me and then a week later they follow me again. I had one guy follow me 11 times.

  2. I have taken to ignoring people who follow me on Twitter unless I actually recognize their names to they do something unpleasant.

  3. I get followed a lot by spammers on twitter. I report them. There is too much to follow on twitter already.
And you can always block someone if they make you feel creepy.
I’m about to start creating lists so I can sort stuff. *sigh*

  4. I liked hearing the Twitter founders say they deliberately called it “following” because the didn’t want there to be the “friending” pressure or implication involved. The only thing from that I’ve gotten is “this person will follow you back if you log in to a website that proves you’re not a ‘bot.” Tough rocks – I follow regardless of whether someone follows me back.

On Facebook, there’s a chance to say “I think this person will be an interesting person to Friend because…” Or “I want to Friend you because….” If that opportunity is not taken, tough rocks (on them) if ignoring goes on.

No. My Facebook policy is to accept “friend” requests from anyone who asks because basically all they are doing is asking for permission to be able to read my blog and Twitter feed through Facebook.
