Welcome to Helicon 2
Welcome at last to Helicon 2. This page contains information about the
hotel, about the convention convention and about St Helier.
As usual, there are a number of general notices, but in particular:
ALL MEMBERS MUST WEAR THEIR MEMBERSHIP BADGES AT ALL TIMES
Were not just being officious, the Dealers Room has to remain members
only or else we open ourselves up to countless problems under St Heliers
trading laws. If you lose your badge, please go to Registration where
they will issue you with a new one (for an amount proportional to the
remaining time of the convention).
If you want to help out with the convention, please come and talk to
Ops or go to the gopher hole in
the Fliquet Room.
Please do not attach posters or flyers to any surface with tape or blutac.
The hotel has been redecorated at vast expense and they are extremely
concerned about damage. If in doubt, ask at Ops and they will suggest
possible alternatives.
Please turn off mobile phones in all programme rooms and respect no-smoking
areas. These include all the programme rooms and the Dealers Room.
The Minstrel Room, which is the convention bar, has also been designated
a no-smoking area. You can smoke in any of the public areas of the hotel.
You should note that drinks prices in the public bars, such as the Atrium
Bar, may be higher than prices in the convention bar.
Members should not wear/carry weapons, or anything that could be mistaken
for one. If you need to
display a weapon as part of a masquerade costume, you must come to Ops
first and they will
peacebond it for you.
Registration
Registration opens on Thursday at 16:00. It is open during the convention
from 09:00 to 18:00, except on Monday when it closes at 14:00
Dealers Room/Art Show times
The Dealers Room and Art Show are in the Empire Room. The opening hours
are:
Friday 12:00 18:00
Saturday 10:00 18:00
Sunday 10:00 18:00
Monday 10:00 14:00
Banquet
The banquet is a ticket-only event on Saturday evening, with a restricted
number of tickets available from Registration at £30 each. There
is a vegetarian option available. Please ensure that you book tickets
early on to avoid disappointment. The De France has produced some memorable
banquets in the past and we hope this will be no exception.
Kaffeeklatsches
A Dutch invention popularised by the 1990 Worldcon, ConFiction, and now
a regular feature of Worldcons, these events offer a small group of people
the opportunity to talk with a favourite author over coffee. Obviously,
each of these sessions can only manage a small number of people so we
ask you to sign up in advance. A full list of who is on when will be posted
at Registration.
Games
The Sorel room has been reserved for those wanting to play games. Do
not confuse this with the hotels own Games Room which has a selection
of video and pinball machines as well as a pool table. This is located
next to the swimming pool.
Chaos Costume
The Belval room has been reserved for chaos costume.
Shopping
The centre of Jersey has a great many interesting shops. Unfortunately,
a lot of these will be closed over Easter, especially on Good Friday and
Easter Monday. Shops will probably be open on Saturday, but not all of
them.
Supermarket, Cash machines etc.
The nearest cashpoints to the hotel are located in the Grand Marche supermarket
which is about 5 minutes walk from the hotel. Turn left at the bottom
of the hotel drive and then right into Stopford Road. Take the first left
into a new road, not marked on many street maps, the supermarket is about
100 yards along on the right. The Grand Marche is closed on Easter Friday
and Easter Sunday, but is open on Saturday and Monday.
Chemist
The nearest chemist/pharmacist to the hotel is down Stopford Road, about
8 minutes walk from the hotel.
Phone
If you get lost, the hotel is in St Saviours Road and the phone number
is 614000.
