The Map

And here is what the island looks like. Note all those beaches. St. Helier is at the centre of the concentration of road to the right of the big bay on the south side of the island.

Phones on Jersey

The cell phone service on Jersey is operated by Jersey Telecom. It operates on the same band as Vodaphone and BT Cellnet (900MHz). If you have an Orange or One-2-One phone on 1800MHz, it must have dual band capability to work on the island. JT is a separate system from the UK
operators and roaming charges will apply for both outgoing and incoming calls. Please contact your mobile phone company to check that your phone allows roaming, if you intend to use it on the island. Roaming rates vary depending on your supplier and your phone plan.

Visitors from overseas are warned that most cut rate services (e.g. those 800 numbers where you can get billed by your US phone company) do not work on Jersey. You will have to pay normal international call rates.

Many internet services such as CIX and GRIC are not available from Jersey. The BT Internet pay-as-you-go number appears to be OK.

Customs

Jersey is still taking precautions against the possibility of importing foor & mouth disease from the UK. There are no restrictions on movement as no actual cases have got to the island, but are are restrictions on what you can import. The following cannot be brought into Jersey:

  • Any meat from susceptible animals e.g. beef, pork, lamb etc
  • Any dairy products such as cheese and butter.

Shopping

Unlike the mainland, Jersey still treats holidays as holidays rather than an excuse to go shopping. Most shops on the island will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday.
